Jennie,
Thank you for sharing your story. I can see from the comments that Al-Anon has helped some people and that’s great. I was married to an addict and one person in particular recommended Al-Anon several times. I was finally honest with her and told her what I had observed.
“Al-Anon helps people cope so that they can stay in the situation. I’m trying to get out of the situation. Happiness for me does not involve a toxic living environment.”
We were eating dinner and she got a horrified look on her face and put her fork down. “You’re right! Al-Anon has helped me stay in a toxic situation for twelve years.”
In a nutshell, I left as you did and I’m further down the road and can tell you that my life is incredible now and filled with wonderful friends. It was the hardest thing I ever did but when I look back, I can say it was the best thing I ever did for my own well-being. My friend also left, got a great job promotion and bought her own dream home.
You’re in good company.
