I don’t read Tarot cards or tell fortunes and I’m certainly no expert on the subject but I’ve used oracle cards for years. I use them for myself to help hone my intuition, to give myself validation and for inspiration. My favorite deck is called Medicine Cards by Jamie Sams and I love it because of my Native American background and experiences. This deck speaks to me; traditional Tarot doesn’t.

One day it occurred to me that I could also use my cards for writing. If I feel blocked or stumped or just need a prompt, I can draw a card and it might give me a bump in the right direction. Sometimes the simplest things can give us the inspiration we need. Think of Virginia Woolf’s essay, The Death of the Moth.

I thought I might share a couple of examples so you can see what I mean. The cards can be used for both non-fiction and fiction.

In the photo you can see the medicine card on the left which is skunk. Skunk represents reputation and you can read what Sams’ has to say about it in more detail but the moment I saw this, I had ideas.

I could write a non-fiction essay on the subject of reputation. I might say your reputation is based on how you treat other people or your work ethics, etc.

Or for fiction, I could do something like this:
