An Old White Woman’s Rambling Rant on Racism, Riots and Law Enforcement
I have white privilege but I also know how it feels to be a second class citizen.
My dad was a racist. He used racial slurs for anyone who wasn’t white and often said, “those people need to know their place.” It was clear that their “place” was servitude, not equality.
He believed that women also needed to know “their place” and after four daughters, he finally gave up trying for a son. When my mother was pregnant with my youngest sister, she was only allowed to choose a male name and buy blue baby supplies. On the way to visit our new sister at the hospital, my dad told me and my siblings to name her.
When it comes to racism, one thing I hear about white supremacists is that they don’t know any better. It was the way they were raised, so they can’t help it.
I call bullshit.
I was raised by a bigoted racist who molested his daughters whom he considered to be his property. He was a man who thought black people should be picking cotton and any other people of color were beneath him.
